Arizona governor, Uber kept self-driving vehicle program secret

An Uber spokesman, Matt Kallman, said the departure was unrelated to the crash in Tempe, but he would not elaborate on why Mr. Ron had left or the timing of his exit.

The move follows a March 18 crash in Tempe, Ariz., in which an Uber vehicle operating in autonomous mode struck and killed a pedestrian. Self-driving startup NuTonomy Inc. suspended self-driving tests on public roads in Boston for a week at the request of city officials.

Behind the scenes, Ducey's staff worked closely with Uber as he championed its regular service and its self-driving vehicles, allowing them to operate without permits and encouraging their testing and operation on public roads.

Uber put a temporary halt to the program in the USA after the March 18 accident, and has opted not to renew its permit to test such vehicles on roads in California.

In the wake of the incident, Uber temporarily suspended the testing of its autonomous vehicles in four US cities including Phoenix.

A brief mention of the autonomous vehicle tests was made at the time in an Arizona Capitol Times that states, "self-driving cars are already being tested on Arizona roads", but it made no mention of Uber. In a letter to Uber CEO, Arizona governor Doug Ducey said he expected companies developing self-driving technology to make safety their top priority. Executives of companies that supply autonomous vehicle technologies pointedly said their systems were capable of detecting the pedestrian.

His partner and a 17-year-old friend were in custody as investigators sought to understand events leading up to the attack. Despite this, Paris prosecutor Francois Molins said there was "no warning sign" that Lakdim would carry out an attack.

They said its presence caused a 30 percent drop in taxi ridership and the loss of almost 1,200 drivers who jumped to Uber, while the value of medallions needed to operate taxis plunged from $545,000 in 2014 to about $80,000 two years later. Are we to expect that none of these cars will face problems?

A report from The New York Times showed that Uber's self-driving cars required more human intervention than self-driving cars from other companies.

Uber, after suspending its self-driving vehicle operations in all markets following a fatal crash, has decided not to re-apply for its self-driving auto permit in California.

Uber operating illegally in itself wasn't an antitrust violation, the decision stated, and the risk of monopoly was offset by the existence of other ride-hailing apps, such as Lyft.

At Uber's September 2016 unveiling of its Pittsburgh self-driving auto operation, it was still using the Fusions, but had a Volvo on display. Three weeks ago, it started a free robot-taxi service for those employees to commute to and from work.
