Boiler caused gas leak that killed Iowa family in Mexico

A prosecutor in Mexico said Monday that a gas leak in a water heater is suspected in the death of an Iowa couple and their two children last week.

Prosecutors for Quintana Roo state said pathologists determined that the members of the Sharp family had probably been dead for 36 to 48 hours before their discovery Friday.

According to local police, Kevin, 41, and Amy Sharp, 38, who were traveling with their children Adrianna, 7, and Sterling, 12, had been reported missing just after midnight on Friday by relatives. They were vacationing in Mexico and were supposed to return to Iowa on March 21, 2018.

According to the Des Moines Register Jana Weland, a cousin to Amy Sharp, says the U.S. Consulate in Mexico informed the family that a gas leak from a water heater or gas stove was what killed the Sharp family.
