How-To: Install the Android P Pixel Launcher on Android 8.0+ Devices

Android folks rejoice as Google brings Lens to all Google Photos users

Finally after a lot of speculations and rumors, Google has announced its next major version of its mobile operating system - Android P (referred internally at Google as "Pistachio Ice Cream"). Confirming about their latest feature, Google said that they are rolling out Google Lens on Wednesday and interested Android users can try it to do things like create a contact from a business card or get more info about a famous landmark. This one is codenamed "P", and your guess is as good as ours as to what dessert-themed name the final version of the software will receive. The highlight of the preview version is built-in support for a notch cutting into the display at the top of the screen, called "display cutout support".

The fate of the final Nexus device, the Nexus Player Android TV box, is now unclear, but it would be surprising if Google released Android P for the set-top box.

Earlier this week, we mentioned that Google was expected to launch the first Android 9.0 Developer Preview build in about two weeks.

Google explains that you can download the latest Developer Preview system image and manually flash it to your device. The API also supports a camera stream that automatically switches between two or more cameras.

Support for images: Android P now displays images in Messaging Notifications on phones.

This has been a big security concern for a while now, so it's nice that Google is taking concrete action against malicious apps which take advantage of this loophole.

Native notch support means that developers will not be too much anxious about their apps switching to full-screen mode on devices with and without cutouts at the top of the display. Replies can also be saved as drafts in Android P should a user mistakenly close the notification. The new look for notifications also includes a refreshed appearance for messaging apps.

Android P's improved security features, including encrypting data traffic and enhanced biometrics, are poised to help establish Android as an enterprise-ready OS, as noted by TechRepublic's Conner Forrest. While GPS mostly doesn't work indoors, Wi-Fi RTT on Android will allow an app (with permission) to calculate your position to within 1 to 2 meters, provided three or more access points are in range. Google Assistant is now limited to some Android devices. The official release of Android P should follow sometime in the fall, if you'd rather skip beta testing altogether.
