Israel officially admits striking Syrian nuclear reactor in 2007

The Intelligence Failure: It Took Years for Israel to Discover Syria's Reactor

Israel's defense minister Avigdor Liberman said Wednesday that a 2007 strike on a suspected Syrian nuclear reactor was a message to his country's enemies, after the military formally acknowledged the raid for the first time.

Military commanders were told to place their troops on high alert in the hours leading up to the attack in case Syria made a decision to respond, The Times of Israel said.

Syria has on numerous occasions slammed the Western countries for supplying Israel with nuclear materials in a blatant violation of the NPT and even helping it to keep its nuclear activities secret.

It said the reactor was "an emerging existential threat to Israel and the entire region".

The reactor, believed to have been built with North Korean designs and materials, was created to produce weapons-grade plutonium for Syrian dictator Hafez al-Assad to develop a nuclear arsenal on Israel's border.

Israel's military has confirmed it was behind an airstrike that destroyed what it believed to be a nuclear reactor in Syria in 2007.

The UN atomic watchdog declared in 2011 that the Syrian site was "very likely" to have been a nuclear reactor, adding that information provided to it suggested that it was being built with North Korean assistance. Israel has also been providing medical treatment to the extremist militants wounded in Syria.

Hezbollah is fighting alongside Assad's regime, like Iran and Russian Federation. "That was our message in 2007, this remains our message today, and it will remain our message to the enemy in the future".

The Deir ez-Zor area of Syria was in the hands of the Islamic State for two years beginning in May 2015.

Israel was unwilling to allow a potential enemy to develop nuclear capability but chose to launch...

Israel is not alone in its concern over Iran's nuclear ambitions.

Tzipi Livni, who was foreign minister at the time of the strike, told The Associated Press that in discussions after Israel discovered the reactor, "we asked ourselves whether Israel can, or is, willing to live with this". Israeli F-16 and F-15 warplanes conducted the strike.

It had been in development for years and was due to begin operations at the end of that year.

A military statement summarising the operation lays out the case for why Israel carried out the strike at the desert site in the Deir Ezzor region of eastern Syria on what it says was a nuclear reactor under construction.

According to James Jeffrey, George W. Bush's deputy national security adviser, the USA president backed the attack at the time. He was released on parole in June of past year after serving 16 and a half months of a 27-month sentence for corruption and obstruction of justice.
