Kitty Hawk Unveils Its Cora Flying Taxi

Flying taxi

Zephyr Airworks, the parent company of Page's Silicon Valley startup called Kitty Hawk, said it is building and testing "all-electric vertical take-off and landing products" in New Zealand.

But now we know that Kitty Hawk had something more ambitious in the works: a small, electric aircraft called Cora, which flies horizontally like an airplane but has the capability to take off and land vertically. Cora can fly up to 110 miles per hour and has a range of 62 miles.

The company has been pitching the air taxi privately since 2016, finally choosing New Zealand as its R&D and certification location as well as its launch market due to the country's large support of renewable energy and electric vehicles as well as its accommodating airspace regulations. "New Zealand has always been viewed as having a thoughtful and safety-conscious regulatory regime", the Times reports.

Kitty Hawk's new Cora video claims the aircraft is "self-piloting" so, again, there's no need for a pilot's license. The air taxi, which can carry two passengers, can fly as fast as 180 kph and has an operating distance of 100 kilometres.

House Intelligence Committee Ends Russian Probe: "No Evidence Of Collusion"
The aides spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the intelligence material. It will also show a pattern of Russian attacks on European allies - information that could be redacted in the final report.

Certifying the vehicle with a regulatory body will be a major undertaking, but if Kitty Hawk and Page succeed, New Zealand could lay out the blueprint for aviation regulators worldwide. That's why Cora can take off and land like a helicopter, eliminating the need for runways,"the company said on its website".

Kitty Hawk was founded by Sebastian Thrun, Google's former director of Google X, its advanced research division which also oversaw Google's autonomous auto developments. Airbus made an investment two weeks ago in Blade, an aviation startup in NY. That means that the rules it develops may become a template for other nations, including the United States.

Mr Reid, a former president of Virgin America, Lufthansa and Delta Airlines, predicted the concept of personal, self-piloted air travel would be common "10 or 20 years from now". Just previous year, Dubai said EHang would begin operating an autonomous flying taxi service last July.

It is expected that a commercial network of flying taxis will be in operation in New Zealand in as soon as three years.
