MICHELLE GOLDBERG: Will Betsy DeVos expand the school-to-prison pipeline?

DeVos There is an ‘urgency’ in solving gun violence

"Your children did not either, correct?"

Alternatively, she might have pointed out that many factors explain why a school system might sink or rise and that pointing to school choice alone offers an incomplete picture.

The soon-to-be-confirmed secretary of education politely confirmed at the time that neither she nor or her children had much experience with the public education system. But she had some news to discuss. Sunday, President Trump named her head of a new commission on school safety in response to the Parkland shooting. If DeVos was coached to be as vague and non-specific in her answers as possible, she should get rid of the person giving her that advice. DeVos has now made the talk show circuit - and a splash - with comments voicing her support for arming teachers. That obliviousness - or worse - is behind one of the more disturbing moments in her "60 Minutes" interview.

Research on private school options found that students that chose a private school were more likely to finish high school and even enter college than their peers in traditional schools.

Stahl didn't provide evidence for these claims, so her line of questioning is worth a closer look.

Yes, and brains are made up of individual brain cells, many of which self-destruct upon hearing DeVos speak. But asked by CBS' Lesley Stahl whether she had visited low-performing schools to understand their needs, DeVos, an ardent proponent of school choice, admitted to having visited none.

Stahl challenged her argument there were "lots of pockets" where students were doing well, telling DeVos: "Your argument that if you take funds away that the schools will get better is not working in MI, where you had a huge impact and influence over the direction of the school system here".

Moreover, it delivers predictable performance and quality with the help of Microsoft-verified apps via the Microsoft Store. Microsoft is contemplating a new " S Mode " for Windows 10 Home, Enterprise, and Pro versions of the OS.

DeVos is of the same mold as Trump in that they both wear their incompetence like a bright gold star that they want all their classmates to see. Overall, I - I can't say overall that they have all gotten better. Stahl persisted. "I have not intentionally visited the schools that are underperforming", DeVos answered. It involved the performance of public schools in Michigan, DeVos's home state and the place where DeVos had spent decades and millions of dollars to encourage the spread of charter schools - which are publicly funded but privately run.

An incredulous Stahl replied, "Maybe you should" and DeVos parroted back tepid, confused agreement. The announcement did not include any federal gun law proposals, but established a panel to assess best practices for improving school safety. I don't know. But I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved.

A 2016 study supported this theory by reviewing data for New York City's education system from the 1996-97 academic year to the 2009-10 academic year.

Critics took to social media to lambaste DeVos - a MI billionaire who never attended or sent her children to a public school - for stumbling over some of her answers about basic education issues. But it is unclear why DeVos thought they should have been used by Stahl. "There is no doubt about it", she continued, admitting that she does not "intentionally (visit) schools that are underperforming".

Asked whether Trump tuned in to "60 Minutes", Sanders said, "I'm not sure if he saw the whole thing or not".

In her appearance Sunday night on "60 Minutes", Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos' goal was to highlight the Trump administration's views on education policy and school choice.

The CBS segment implied that Ms. DeVos had no answer after she was asked at a Harvard forum how much money she would make from her school-choice policies, a clip that ended with the moderator saying, "You can choose not to answer that, Secretary".
