Nvidia Declines After Suspending Self-Driving Car Testing

NVIDIA aims to make self-driving safer with virtual simulations

More recently, GPU deep learning ignited modern AI - the next era of computing - with the GPU acting as the brain of computers, robots and self-driving cars that can perceive and understand the world.

Nvidia announced it was working on the technology at last year's summit.

"Safety is the single most important thing, and this is the hardest computing problem", Huang said. Autonomous-driving companies have also been using simulators built for gaming to train their algorithms.

Even though the causes and consequences of Uber's accident are unclear, Huang remains a believer in the overall idea of autonomous vehicles and said people should still expect to see them on the road in some capacity.

Last week, Uber suspended North American tests of its self-driving vehicles after one of its self-driving cars killed a woman in Arizona.

The technology is created to allow automakers and others to validate their technology on billions of driving miles and increase the strength of their algorithms by repeatedly testing hard scenarios, which would be impractical in the real world.

Uber knew of problems with self-driving cars before fatal crash
After its strong California results, Waymo is now testing cars in Chandler, Arizona, a Phoenix suburb, with no safety drivers. According to the police, the auto , with one safety driver and operating in autonomous mode, did not slow down before impact.

Testing may not involve putting self-driving cars on public streets, with all the safety issues that entails, but virtual environments aren't real ones, no matter how authentic the simulations seem.

Today at GTX 2018, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced that the company halted all public self-driving vehicle testing worldwide until further notice, though it's still operating manually-driven vehicles with its AI technologies so it can continue to capture real-world data and work to make these systems safer.

The second server is Nvidia's Drive Pegasus AI auto computer that runs a full autonomous-vehicle software stack, processing the simulated data the same way it would process data from a real self-driving auto.

Driving commands from DRIVE Pegasus are fed back to the simulator, completing the digital feedback loop.

"This happens 30 times per second", Shapiro said. It can simulate different weather such as rainstorms and snowstorms; blinding glare at different times of the day, or limited vision at night; and all different types of road surfaces and terrain. Huang said the platform uses two different servers.
