'Pacific Rim: Uprising' beats 'Black Panther' To Number One Spot

Weekend Box Office: 'Pacific Rim 2' Cuts Down 'Black Panther'

Bigger news is the fact that the top grossing superhero movie in North America has now changed.

Pacific Rim: Uprising premiered in the Number One spot at the box office with $28 Million.

After five weekends on top, Marvel's Black Panther was dethroned by Universal's Pacific Rim Uprising which was the only of the new wide releases to do well.

The sci-fi sequel had a softer opening than 2013's "Pacific Rim", which opened with $37 million in July of that year. The film stars John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba) from the original movie, along with returning stars Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, and Burn Gorman, and series newcomers Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona, and Zhang Jin.

Speaking of which, Uprising brought in an estimated $122.5 million internationally this weekend, including a $65 million debut in China, ~$20 million more than the first film's opening weekend in the market before it went on to gross over $111 million.

Pacific Rim Uprising's strong debut does little to diffract from its competitor.

Ex-Catalan leader, Puigdemont, 12 others charged with rebellion
But they have still not been able to form a government as their two previous candidates for the presidency proved problematic. Five other Catalan politicians, including Puigdemont, fled to Brussels following the bid for independence in late October.

Despite falling to second place, Black Panther still brought in $16.1 million to raise its domestic six-week total over $630 million. The movie has become the highest-grossing superhero movie in the USA, not adjusted for inflation.

Gnomeo and Juliet opened to $25 million in 2011 while the 2018 sequel brought in just $10 million over its first three days in release. "Black Panther" was written and directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Martin Freeman, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. What makes these feats all the more impressive, for their respective franchises, is the worthy competition they were up against: a Wes Anderson film, A Tomb Raider reboot, and a host of others.

"I Can Only Imagine" has emerged as the clear faith-based film of choice ahead of Easter, likely to the detriment of "Paul: Apostle of Christ", which took in $5 million this weekend for Sony's Affirm Films. It should finish off domestically with around $35 million, and on a $59 million budget that won't be a money-making total. Domestically, it dropped steeply in its second week, sliding 56 per cent with $10.4 million. "I Can Only Imagine", $13.8 million. 4. "Black Panther", $16.7 million ($12.9 million international). 3. "A Wrinkle in Time", $8 million. 7.

Fox's coming out comedy Love, Simon followed in seventh place with $7.8 million, down just 34% from its opening weekend with $21.7 million grossed domestically so far. "We know that audiences want to see it".

The faith-based drama, Paul, Apostle of Christ, was fifth with $5-million.

Opening at #10 was young adult romance Midnight Sun, flopping with a mere $4.1 million.
