Apple likely to discontinue iPhone X this year

Apple's iPhone SE as seen on its official site

According to a top analyst Campling, the problem with the iPhone X is that it is too expensive and therefore, it has forced the consumers to turn their backs on this top end device. Now today, it is being said that Apple might be killing the iPhone X totally. Campling believes its the X's price that's preventing people from buying.

While the softer forecast is about $1 billion less than what was initially expected by analysts, sales are still expected to reach as high as $7.9 billion.

"Additionally, China smartphone activation data points to a reversal in Apple share trajectory with losses through March that presents a meaningful headwind in the largest smartphone market", the note continued.

It was all enough to spook investors.

Apple Inc. shares fell $0.75 (-0.43%) in premarket trading Friday.

The DSDS capability seems to be a last-minute addition, according to Apple Insider, which likely made it in time for the mass production schedule of the new LCD-based iPhones. IPhone orders look normal for most sources, but big Chinese channels are switching to local vendors in Q2 amid intensifying competition. This is the only reason which shows why Apple don't want to continue with iPhone X.

"More price segments would be created, significantly boosting shipments via the low-price single-SIM model", Kuo mentioned in his note, before adding another advantage of a DSDS model for Apple. "While the numbers may abate a bit, it's still hot".

CNBC passes along Campling's call on Apple.

Apple has raised hopes that it might be preparing a new iPhone SE after tech bloggers seized on a filing by the company on Wednesday. Most of the answers Piper Jaffray received were at least related to price.

KGI Securities' acclaimed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has predicted the phone will be shelved pretty soon.

Apple is reportedly working on the iPhone SE successor, and it widely expected to launch the smartphone sometime in May. The only one who knows is Apple.

The Cupertino, Calif., company reported a decline in unit iPhone sales in the December quarter - but managed to hit revenue targets thanks to the X's stratospheric price tag. It would offer the Touch ID instead of Face ID as implementing a Face ID required high-end configuration. Prospective prices for the two OLED iPhones Apple plans to introduce in 2018, but those were expensive. Whereas, single SIM model models will be low-cost, which will be offered at US$ 550 to US$ 650.
