Australia sternly warns Commonwealth Athletes as some go missing

Highlights, Commonwealth Games 2018 Gold Coast: Heena Sidhu wins gold in 25m pistol; Indian boxers shine on Day 6

Officials said they are monitoring reports of the absences from the federations.

Press attache Simon Molombe said officials viewed the vanishing act as "desertion" and that the missing athletes had been reported to Australian police.

Mr Dutton said most Games athletes were on visas that remained valid until mid-May, but he was concerned by two instances in which athletes missed their events at the Games "when that was the reason they were here".

Five of the missing athletes are boxers, while three are weightlifters.

"But out here, only six of them effectively took part in their respective competitions, while two left without competing".

One who failed to appear was Ulrich Rodrigue Yombo who skipped Wednesday morning's weigh-in for his quarter-final bout in the 81kg division against Canada's Harley O'Reilly.

'These people and others that might have a similar objective need to hear this message very clearly - they aren't going to game the system, ' he said.

In a statement, Nso confirmed the eight athletes, all of whom attended a pre-Games in Warwick, had left in "three waves" during the Games.

"Nobody said anything, they did not give any condition, they just left", he said.

"We would appreciate them sticking within the law, enjoying themselves, but sticking within the law", organising committee boss Peter Beattie told reporters.

It's obviously disappointing that I think some of the athletes that have come didn't compete as they were scheduled to compete.

"If there is a breach then [Home Affairs Minister] Peter Dutton and the department will deal with it", he said.

The mayor of the rural Australian town that hosted the missing Cameroonian athletes has described their movements in the lead up to their mysterious disappearance.

We're obviously looking at it very carefully.

It is not the first time competitors have gone missing at worldwide events.

The organizers say athletes from Rwanda and Uganda were thought to have gone missing, with the whereabouts of two squash players from Sierra Leone still unknown.

Cameroon weightlifters Francois Etoundi and Simplice Ribouem both received refugee status, and were in the 2018 Australian team.
