Don't eat any romaine lettuce coming from the Yuma, Arizona growing region- that's the new warning out Friday from the Centers for Disease Control after a multi-state E. coli outbreak is being linked to romaine lettuce grown in that region. Therefore, consumers should throw out any romaine lettuce in their homes, even if partially eaten, and avoid eating romaine at restaurants unless the establishment can confirm that the lettuce is not from Yuma.

At least 31 of the people who have become sick due to the outbreak have been hospitalized. "Ask your suppliers about the source of their romaine lettuce", the CDC said.

Officials said people at an Alaska correctional facility recently reported feeling ill after eating romaine lettuce that was traced back to lettuce heads harvested in Yuma, which is roughly 185 miles southwest of Phoenix.

Officials are advising consumers to avoid any romaine lettuce products, including salad mixes, that contain chopped romaine lettuce. The central IL resident reported consuming chopped romaine lettuce before illness onset.

Thirty-one of those have been hospitalized, the CDC said, and although no one has died, five people have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Four cases have been found in Maricopa County and another from Pinal County related to the multi-state outbreak.

It's now recommending that you don't eat, serve or sell ANY romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona region. Most people recover in a week. The case count includes one of the infected Alaska inmates; the remaining seven cases there will be included when the CDC provides its next count update, which is expected next week.

The chopped romaine lettuce comes from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

Since then the number of people becoming ill has grown to 53 in sixteen states.
