Community reacts to President Trump sending National Guard to US-Mexico border

National Guard troops headed for border Friday night

And the Texas National Guard said it was already sending Guardsmen to the border, with plans to place 250 troops there in the next 72 hours as an "initial surge", according to a Guard spokesman.

- Governor Kate Brown (@OregonGovBrown) April 4, 2018There's been no outreach by the President or federal officials, and I have no intention of allowing Oregon's guard troops to be used to distract from his troubles in Washington.

A spokeswoman for the Pentagon, Dana White, said Thursday: "These National Guard members will act in support of Border Patrol agents who are performing law enforcement duties".

More troops will be sent once mission requirements and locations are determined, she added. And while they offered a detailed account of what they see as the main current problem there - a rising number of Central American refugees making claims for asylum - they left unclear what troops could do about it.

Some governors from other states indicated they would resist any attempt to send National Guard troops from their states, if asked by the administration. The Trump administration has been meeting with governors of the states bordering Mexico on the matter, and all of them have said they support the idea.

Arizona's Gov. Doug Ducey responded on Twitter that his state "welcomes this enhanced security", and that he appreciated the opportunity to discuss the plan with Nielsen as well as Abbott, Martinez and California's Gov.

Trump has recently criticized the United States' "weak" border laws.

Rep. Ted Lieu (D-Calif.) said Thursday that the California governor, who has previously accused the Trump administration of "basically going to war" with his state over immigration policy, could say no to the deployment request.

"We'll figure it out", he said.

"If the president were to deploy under Title 32, he'd obviously have to have the approval of the governor", Hockaday said, citing an assessment from the governor's attorney.

"Our border with Mexico is safer than it has been in years", Reyes wrote, adding that it's too expensive and unnecessary. This time it's using the military at the border to catch those crossing illegally.

President trump tweeted, "We are sealing up our southern border".

National Guard troops have been deploying to the southern border for decades after orders by presidents and governors from both parties.

The Pentagon could not say where the money would come from and Trump admitted the White House was still "looking at" costs.

Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has said she would deny Trump's request.

They improved lighting at border crossings, extended existing fencing along the worldwide boundary, built roads, monitored remote cameras, operated communications equipment and sat in mobile observation towers watching for people sneaking into the U.S. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer had recently signed SB 1070 into law, creating a confrontation with Obama over immigration enforcement. The Texas Guard says it has "firsthand knowledge of the mission and operating area" that will allow it to move seamlessly into the new role.

- From 2006 through 2008, President George W. Bush stationed 6,000 Guard members at the border, 2,400 of them in Arizona.
