The CDC says individuals in the USA who have a chopped romaine lettuce product, such as a salad mix containing the leaves, should not eat it and instead throw it away.

Seventeen people have been infected including six hospitalized in an E. coli outbreak detected in seven states, a new report has revealed.

Though no deaths have been reported in connection with this outbreak, the three most severely affected individuals develop hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure.

On Friday the Centers for Disease Control said that it had determined that 35 people in eleven states were included in the outbreak.

In a joint statement, the Produce Marketing Association, Arizona Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, California Leafy Greens Marketing Agreement, United Fresh and Western Growers said they were cooperating fully with government and working closely to further identify the specific source of this outbreak.

For consumers, CDC said this means any store-bought chopped romaine lettuce purchased for home-made salads and salad mixings is best thrown out. Before buying romaine lettuce at a grocery store or eating it at a restaurant, confirm that it is not chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region. The Illinois resident reported consuming chopped romaine lettuce before illness onset, in central Illinois. Ask your suppliers about the source of their chopped romaine lettuce.

Health officials are investigating a Panera Bread in Phillipsburg, New Jersey after a cluster of E. coli illnesses were reported.

The symptoms of E. coli include stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting, according to the CDC. The lettuce has been found in both restaurants and private homes.

The state Department of Health has confirmed seven cases of E. coli in New Jersey; four in Hunterdon County, and one each in Monmouth, Sussex and Somerset counties.
