Google's AI guru is now Apple's AI guru

Google appoints veteran engineers to lead Search, Artificial Intelligence amid 'AI first' push

Giannandrea joined Google back in 2010 and was leading the company's search and AI units, after Amit Singhal, head of search had left.

The company has been slow-moving on most things AI, from barring employees from publishing AI research up until December 2016 to joining in late to an ethical AI research consortium co-founded by Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Amazon and IBM.

The move will see Giannandrea head up Apple's AI and machine learning division, where he will report directly into CEO Tim Cook. At the time, he said that more efforts are required to make computers smarter so that they can think better.

Poaching the industry's top talent is certainly a step in the right direction, but Apple clearly needs to dedicate more resources to the field.

Giannandrea stepped down from his position at Google yesterday and was reportedly planning to stay on at Google in a different role.

Apart from enhancing Apple Siri AI capabilities, Giannandrea would also possibly supervise the development of products like Core ML for iOS app developers and the dedicated AI Chip, which is allegedly under development.

On Friday Patently Apple posted a report titled "A new Analytical Report Claims that Apple is on a Wild Hiring Spree for Engineers that Could Boost Siri's Popularity". Jeff Dean, who is now overseeing the Google Brain team, will be in charge of artificial intelligence. The service has been available in iPhones, iPads, and Macs for years, but is now available in the company's HomePod smart speaker. Prior to his 10 years at Google, Giannandrea was the chief technology officer at a startup called Metaweb, which was acquired by Google. But alas, with its competitors such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, and Amazon, progressing in the field which Apple initiated, the company feels it is high time to make a comeback.

Considered a highly desired executive, especially as A.I. seems to steadily grow in prevalence and importance, John Giannandrea will help spearhead Apple's machine learning and A.I. strategy. The company is said to be working on a privacy feature with a new Apple ID tool that will allow users to download all their personal information.

Apple has always taken a very strong stance on privacy, but this isn't great for machine learning since neural networks require enormous amounts of data to improve.
