Here's how Facebook tracks you even when you're logged out

Mark Zuckerberg

While the subject isn't as black and white as Mark Zuckerberg claims, there's one social network site that is sure about the privacy of its users' data.

Facebook Analytics provides developers information on how people are spending time on their websites and apps. Baser said when you use those websites or apps, Facebook collects data to show relevant ads, make other sites more social and "help" them "better understand how people use their services".

The company insists that it only provides insights for advertisers based on user metrics, and maintains that Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm based in the United Kingdom that claims to influence elections, took advantage of this system back in 2014. Zuckerberg did not respond.

"He's the founder and face of that company, and has been the subject of specific threats", Barrall said, according to Facebook's proxy. While Facebook has been getting the brunt of the recent outrage over its data collection and privacy practices, some methods are industry standard.

The researchers labeled suspicious ad-buyers as groups with pages that have been inactive, inaccessible, removed or banned by Facebook since the election and there was no information available publicly about them. Facebook plans to look into whether Cubeyou collected data for academic purposes and then used it commercially, following a partnership with Cambridge University in the UK.

"Facebook Audience Network enables other websites and apps to show ads from Facebook advertisers. This would apply to other services beyond Facebook because, as mentioned, it is standard to how the internet works". When a user clicks on a like button on a website or app, for the data to reflect on the website, Facebook has to send it to the browser and for that it needs the IP address.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg vowed to revamp Facebook and had said the company would ensure that its platform is not misused to influence elections in India and elsewhere.

Advocates and lawmakers say they are singling out Facebook because of its size, rivalled outside China only by Alphabet Inc's Google, and because they allege Zuckerberg was not forthcoming about the extent and reasons for the tracking.

While we can debate on how true that actually is, it doesn't change the fact that it is happening and that it is concerning.

Following a data breach that affected millions of Facebook users and admissions from the social media giant that it used automated tools to scan the messages we send on Messenger, Facebook is now asking some users to review their privacy settings in order to keep using its messaging app. In the aftermath of President Trump's election, many speculated whether Zuckerberg's carefully orchestrated road trip, which included photo-ops with farmers in Wisconsin, firemen in IN, and college football coach Nick Saban in Alabama, was part of grander political ambitions or a way to make amends after a tough year for Facebook's image. Cookies are files created and saved by websites based on users' browsing history. Facebook said on Friday that it does not do so. Access to public user preferences, likes, news feeds and shares-with given permission-are all swiftly monetized.

Despite all of the bad news, Facebook is not going anywhere. "At a minimum, shareholders deserve disclosure about why" costs increase that noticeably, said Rosanna Landis Weaver, an executive compensation expert for the nonprofit As You Sow.
