Here's what Trump could do to Amazon

Trump loads another tweet into the chamber — and fires on Amazon again

Trump also wants to change Amazon's tax treatment, the report said, an issue the president raised publicly previous year when he called for an internet tax for online retailers, even though Amazon already collects sales tax on items it sells direct to customers.

Trump's Thursday tweet echoes one from August 2017 in which he said, "Amazon is doing great damage to tax paying retailers".

Trump's criticism did not diminish USA fund managers' long-term enthusiasm for Amazon, whose stock has risen more than five-fold in the last five years.

In the case to be argued on April 17, South Dakota is asking the nine justices to overturn a 1992 Supreme Court ruling that only companies with a physical presence in a state are required to collect the state's sales tax on purchases. Amazon's choice of location for the new campus, winnowed to 20 candidates in January, has sparked fierce competition between state and local governments offering extensive tax breaks.

It's also true that Amazon, as well as other online retailers, may not pay taxes in some areas, but that's because the laws there haven't kept pace with technology, according to the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.

A Supreme Court ruling favouring South Dakota could funnel up to $13 billion (£9.3 billion) annually of new tax revenues into the coffers of affected US states, according to a 2017 federal government report.

Amazon's creative methods of reducing its taxes are well documented.

Amazon, among tech companies, is Trump's favorite target, and not just for package delivery. The development comes at a time when the local arm of the Seattle-based company has been faced with issues from several of the third-party sellers, especially the ones who do not use the e-commerce major's Fulfilled By Amazon (FBA) service. It employs many of its 566,000 full and part-time staff in the United States and has allowed some small vendors to thrive on its service, but it has also been blamed by some for putting brick-and-mortar stores out of business as more people shop online. The stock closed Wednesday down 4.4 percent - the biggest drop in a month - at $1,431.42 a share.

Donald Trump has long expressed negativity towards Amazon and its founder, Jeff Bezos.

For a time, many people selling things on Amazon would set themselves up in states with little or no state income tax, and then declare that all the income they earned in the US should be taxed as though it was from there, regardless of where the buyer was from.

Asked about Wednesday's report, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the administration wasn't considering policy moves aimed at Amazon.

One possible change could affect the growing number of third-party retailers that sell through Amazon.

The reality, however, is that Amazon has little to do with why USPS has been bleeding red ink.

Sources say Amazon had cut ties from the lobbying firms last Friday and in their place hired Paul Brathwaite of Federal Street Strategies LLC and Josh Holly of Holly Strategies Inc, both of whom have previously worked as outside lobbyists for Airbnb Inc and Oracle. During its most recent fiscal year, which ended in September, the USPS reported a total annual revenue of $69.7 billion, which was less than the $71.4 billion recorded in fiscal year 2016. "So has Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, Kroger and any other superstore that took share from small businesses". Or is it something to do with the CEO and founder of Amazon, billionaire Jeff Bezos?

In his tweet, Trump also took aim at the company's use of the postal service is "causing tremendous loss", but that too is misleading. "It's really about policy".
