Orban to use landslide victory to move against foreign NGOs

In the parliamentary elections in Hungary has won the ruling coalition

French National Front head Marine Le Pen said the "EU's reversal of values and mass immigration were rejected again", while Brexiteer Nigel Farage called Mr Orban the EU's "biggest nightmare".

Hungary's anti-immigration populist premier Viktor Orban was set for a third straight term on Monday after a crushing election victory, delighting other nationalists but likely causing unease in some other European Union members.

Orban, however, said the country was a "constitutional democracy" and functioning as such.

However, nationalists and those on the far-right who admire Orban's strident brand of identity politics and claims to be a protector of "Christian Europe" will take comfort in the result.

Human rights group Amnesty International warned against "attempts to stoke hostility towards refugees and migrants" under Orban.

"We will not continue governing, but a new government will be formed instead", said Orban, who won a third consecutive term - and fourth overall - in Sunday's parliamentary election. The right-wing nationalist Jobbik party placed second with 26 seats, while a Socialist-led, left-wing coalition ran third with 20.

Voter turnout had reached 69.26 percent, up more than seven points on elections in 2014, the NVI said, with several polling stations forced to open late to accommodate the increase.

'We created the opportunity for ourselves to defend Hungary, ' Orban said after his landslide win in Sunday's vote.

Far from stepping back from his campaign rhetoric which was fought on an anti-immigration platform, Mr Orban said his re-election had provided him with a "strong mandate" to introduce a raft of changes in the Hungarian parliament.

Viktor Orban has been defiant in the face of EU criticism, and some observers say the fact his Fidesz party is part of the European People's Party (EPP). They believe a rift could deepen with countries promoting European Union unity, such as France and Germany. It paid off in spades, and with Orban developing a rare knack for connecting with ordinary voters, he duly became prime minister in 1998 at just 35.

"It is quite obvious that there are also controversial issues in our cooperation, the different stances in migration policy come to mind", Seibert added.

Also among Orban's likely targets are Hungary's remaining independent media, the courts that have made numerous rulings the government did not like and a university founded by Hungarian-American billionaire George Soros.
