Sarah Sanders, Trump Roast Democrats Opposing Pompeo Nomination

Pompeo A Proven Leader for the State Department

The panel may not have enough votes to recommend him for confirmation Monday as all Democrats, and at least one Republican, have said they will oppose him.

The Foreign Relations Committee is set to vote on Monday on Pompeo, who now is director of the Central Intelligence Agency, and he could become the first secretary of state nominee not to win support from the panel.

Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin (W.Va.) announced Monday he would vote to confirm CIA Director Mike Pompeo as secretary of state.

Democratic lawmakers are under pressure from their base to oppose the president, but some fear losing re-election over being labeled obstructionists.

In a rare rebuke to a US president on a confirmation vote for a key national security position, the panel could give Pompeo an unfavorable recommendation and still send his nomination to the full Senate.

The committee action won't necessarily stall Pompeo's confirmation before the full Senate, but it would be an unusual setback not seen since the panel took a pass on John Bolton, President George W. Bush's pick for ambassador to the United Nations.

Pompeo has performed ably in his current job, with none of the gaffes or ethical lapses of some of Trump's other appointees.

Syracuse Frat Suspended for Staggeringly Racist Video
Syracuse University has suspended one of its fraternities after videos laden with offensive behavior were discovered online. She noted that most of the people protesting were students of color, despite the university's majority-white student body.

White House allies are pushing the administration's view that Pompeo's recent high-stakes meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jung Un solidifies the diplomatic credentials of the West Point and Harvard Law graduate.

Democrats are more likely to object because Pompeo is too closely aligned with Trump on global issues, hostile to the Iran nuclear deal and given to harsh remarks about Muslims and homosexuality.

"Nothing could better underscore the importance of getting America's top diplomat in place for such a time as this", White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders tweeted. But with Paul a firm "no" and Senator John McCain absent due to illness, Pompeo can receive at most 49 Republican votes.

Mike Pompeo could make history this week, but not necessarily in a good way. The State Department could use a secretary equipped for the job of advancing USA interests in concert with the president - and the sooner the better.

Joe Donnelly of IN are among several Democratic senators up for re-election IN Trump-won states that the administration and its allies have spotlighted.

Ultimately, the committee's vote on Mr Pompeo will be "largely irrelevant in the near future", said Mr Brett Schaefer, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation.

President Donald Trump's selection for secretary of state could get a rare Congressional "no" vote.
