Senate advances legislation to protect Robert Mueller from being fired

Trump said in a phone interview Thursday with “Fox & Friends” that Mueller’s probe “is a disgrace.”

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to protect special counsel Robert Mueller's job, putting the matter in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has said he won't let the bill reach Senate floor. Mueller and his team are now interested in interviewing Trump to determine whether the president engaged in obstruction of justice. But with four Republicans, including the committee's chairman, Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, joining Democrats to vote in favor it, the measure sent a clear message to President Trump that senators are serious in their warnings not to fire Mr. Mueller. All 10 Democrats on the panel joined with four Republicans to approve the legislation. Thom Tillis and Lindsey Graham, two of the bill's cosponsors, as well as Sen. "While this outcome would, at first blush, seem to support the Mueller bill", the Atlantic reports, "a number of liberal legal scholars have endorsed the late Justice Antonin Scalia's dissent in Morrison, in which he argued the law usurps presidential power".

Legislation to protect Mueller, who's leading the Justice Department's Russian Federation investigation, has been batted around in Congress for weeks. Trump has repeatedly dubbed the probe a "witch hunt".

"Our Justice Department - which I try and stay away from, but at some point I won't - our Justice Department should be looking at that kind of stuff, not the nonsense of collusion with Russia", Trump said.

As of 10pm local time Monday, there had been no comment from a spokesperson for the Saudi-led coalition on these reports. In late 2015, coalition air strikes on two wedding parties in northern Yemen killed at least 159 civilians.

In effect, if a court determines the special counsel wasn't fired for "good cause", they would be reinstated. "But because of the fact that it's going on, and I think you'll understand this, I have decided that I won't be involved", Trump said.

There also are constitutional concerns about the bill, known as the Special Counsel Independence and Integrity Act.

Egged on by some of his strongest supporters, President Donald Trump has taken an increasingly combative posture toward Mueller's investigation since FBI agents raided the home and office of his lawyer Michael Cohen earlier this month. There were some disagreements over parts of an amendment added by Grassley, but "everybody went to work and worked it out", Feinstein said. She went on to say that she believes "we have a piece of legislation that I believe will stand the test of time and will also stand the test of scrutiny".
