Syria Says It Responded to US-led Missile Strikes

May ready to bypass Parliament & approve UK military intervention in Syria – BBC

U.S. President Donald Trump announces military strikes on Syria while delivering a statement from the White House in Washington.

Mr Trump said the Syrian regime's use of chemical weapons on Douma was a "significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime".

The strikes would result in a "long term degradation of Syria's ability" to create, use and deploy chemical weapons, U.S. Gen. Joseph Dunford said in a press conference Friday night, adding that the operation was meant to inflict "maximum damage" with minimal risk to civilians.

Syrian state TV called the attacks a "blatant violation of global law and shows contempt for worldwide legitimacy".

However, nearly a week on, the United States and some European countries have failed to provide any evidence, he said.

In accordance with the chemical weapons convention prohibiting the use of such weapons, we urge responsible nations to condemn the Assad regime and join us in our firm resolve to prevent chemical weapons from being used again.

When asked whether the British parliament should approve any possible United Kingdom intervention in Syria, Shaw said that he wonders "what possible motive could have triggered Syria to launch this chemical attack at this time in this place".

"This persistent pattern of behaviour must be stopped - not just to protect innocent people in Syria from the horrific deaths and casualties caused by chemical weapons but also because we can not allow the erosion of the worldwide norm that prevents the use of these weapons".

The President had strong words for Russia, "In 2013, President Putin and his government promised the world that they would guarantee the elimination of Assad's chemical weapons but recent attacks and today's response are the direct result of Russia's failure to keep that promise. They are crimes of a monster instead".
