This is why YouTube removed more than 8 million videos

Google says that more partners will be added over time.

Later in the year, parents will be able to handpick channels that reach beyond the partners YouTube selects.

YouTube now uses something called an algorithm.

YouTube Kids has struggled with disturbing videos, like beloved Disney characters in violent or sexual situations, sneaking past its automated filters.

Improved search-off control for an even more contained experience: Parents have always been able to turn search off within the YouTube Kids app, but starting this week turning search off will limit the YouTube Kids experience to channels that have been verified by the YouTube Kids team.

YouTube is quick to point out that parents who are happy with how the YouTube Kids app works now will still have the ability to open up a wider selection of video content. Earlier this month, it a consortium of consumer rights and privacy groups filed an FTC complaint against YouTube, alleging that its main YouTube site, not YouTube Kids, collects children's data without parental consent, in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act or COPPA. As the biggest video source on the Internet, YouTube creates a dedicated YouTube Kids app to become a safe haven for children, basically anyone under 13 years old, to enjoy the treasury of the service's content. But parents have discovered a range of inappropriate videos on the app, highlighting the platform's dependence on automation and a lack of human oversight. It's a side effect of the way YouTube Kids finds its videos.

YouTube is under huge pressure to stay on top of inappropriate content, with the company being criticised for carrying videos promoting terrorism and child abuse. The company says its machine learning processes can take several days to evaluate a video.

Any video uploaded to the regular version of YouTube can theoretically appear on YouTube Kids if the company's algorithms judge it to be suitable. This change is an effort to let parents be the final decider when it comes to what they feel comfortable letting their children view. These videos have included Spiderman urinating on Frozen's Elsa, Peppa Pig drinking bleach, and Micky Mouse getting run over by a vehicle.

The new features include "Collections" that will allow parents to choose only the channel collection and subjects they want their kids to view.
