Trump Attorney Cohen Is Subject Of Months-Long Federal Criminal Investigation

Feds wanted ‘Access Hollywood’ tape evidence during Trump lawyer raid

Despite being the subject of a criminal investigation surrounding his business dealings, Michael Cohen appeared casual and composed while being photographed around NY this week. But because Cohen is so closely connected to Trump, the development apparently has the president bracing for the worst, The New York Times reported on Friday.

It was a balmy Friday in New York City, but Michael Cohen probably wasn't in a very bright mood. She argued that materials obtained from Cohen had to be handled carefully because some could relate to a sitting president.

Investigators have also looked for a possible broader pattern of fraud, tax evasion, money laundering and other crimes in Cohen's private dealings, including his work for Trump and real estate purchased by Russian buyers, the person said.

As his lawyers went to court in NY on Friday to try to block prosecutors from reading files that were seized from the personal lawyer, Michael D. Cohen, this week, Mr. Trump found himself increasingly isolated in mounting a response.

The judge also heard a request from Michael Avenatti, Daniels' lawyer, to weigh in on the files because they likely involved her, and the judge consented.

She ordered the lawyers - including Cohen - to return to court Monday with more details, including a list of Cohen's clients.

"It's awesome that President Trump didn't have the good judgment to let it alone, to have nothing to do with Michael Cohen until this is sorted out", he added.

Whatever the judge decided, Hendon said, would have to "withstand scrutiny for all time".

"Confirmation of the trip would lend credence to a retired British spy's report that Cohen strategized there with a powerful Kremlin figure about Russian meddling in the US election". The president's lawyers have said they want to review the documents that were confiscated.

The Cohen episode has clearly rattled the president, even beyond his usual fragile mental state.

"His attorney-client privilege is no stronger than anyone else who seeks legal advice", McKay told Wood.

The judge in the suit had given Cohen until Friday evening to formally request the stay. The woman's name has not been made public and the source declined to disclose it.

Stephen Ryan, a lawyer for Mr. Cohen, referred to his earlier description of the raid as "completely inappropriate and unnecessary".

Federal agents raided Cohen's Manhattan office and residence on Monday, seizing records on topics, including a $130,000 payment made to porn actress Stormy Daniels.

Each search warrant specifically describes how records seized that may fall into attorney-client privilege will be filtered out by a team that's walled off from the federal agents who have conducted the investigation, the prosecutors wrote.

Investigators are said to have sought additional records related to a 2005 "Access Hollywood" tape featuring Trump in an effort to determine whether, and to what extent, Cohen tried to quash damaging information about the president during the election.
