Uber to implement new safety changes, CEO says

Uber app

This week, Uber announced both a redesign of its driver app and a new set of passenger safety features.

Uber Technologies, Inc. has agreed to expand the proposed settlement it reached with the Federal Trade Commission past year over charges that the ride-sharing company deceived consumers about its privacy and data security practices.

"In the USA, 911 is the panic button", then Uber security chief Joe Sullivan told the Washington Post in 2016, adding it would be "a stretch" for the company to improve on pre-existing emergency alert infrastructure.

As part of the major safety overhaul, riders will be able to designate up to five friends and family members as "trusted contacts" and share trip details of every ride. You can also set it so ride information is shared only at night.

'The announcements that we're making are just a step along the way of making Uber fundamentally safer for drivers and riders'.

That's the sort of mentality Khosrowshahi wants to move away from as he seeks to burnish Uber's tarnished public image. But for now, it will use just about any other means to get you around.

Working with the National Emergency Number Association so that 911 calls from the App are immediately directed to the correct call center, speeding up response time. While no background check is ideal, our process is thorough, fair, and relevant to the work at hand. Khosrowshahi says he and his team "believe in" them.

New offense notifications: Uber will go beyond annual reruns and be among the first to invest in technology that rapidly identifies new offenses.

In the 2016 breach, intruders in a data-storage service run by Amazon.com Inc. obtained unencrypted consumer personal information relating to US riders and drivers, including 25.6 million names and email addresses, 22.1 million names and mobile phone numbers, and 607,000 names and driver's license numbers, the FTC said in a complaint.

Uber plans to add several new safety features this summer.

Uber's new 911 Assistance service is now under testing mode and is being used in Denver.

Uber also announced the addition of former U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson as chair of the company's Safety Advisory Board.
