Legendary US author Philip Roth dead at 85

Pulitizer Prize and National Book Award-winning novelist Philip Roth has died according to multiple reports. He's shown in this 2013 file

But Roth's giant stature on the post-World War II literary scene stems from the universality of his message - in his own words: "I don't write Jewish, I write American".

How Philip Roth's Writing Transcended The Narrow Confines Of A Culture Philip Roth, one of the country's most celebrated writers, has died at 85.

Roth's literary agent, Andrew Wylie, told U.S. media that the writer, who won the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for his acclaimed novel "American Pastoral", died of congestive heart failure.

A prolific writer, Roth was the author of dozens of novels including Portnoy's Complaint, American Pastoral and Goodbye, Columbus.

His large body of work award Roth numerous prestigious awards and honors, including two National Book Critics Circle Awards, three PEN/Faulkner Awards, a WH Smith Literary Award and a Man Booker International Prize.

Roth was born in Newark, N.J. and attended Rutgers University and later transferred to Bucknell University.

With 1979's The Ghost Writer, Roth introduced readers to a recurring character named Nathan Zuckerman, who would also appear in Zuckerman Unbound, The Anatomy Lesson, The Prague Orgy, The Counterlife, American Pastoral, I Married a Communist, The Human Stain and Exit Ghost.

When asked whether the central character of his fictional novel - Lindbergh - was exactly like Trump, Roth disagreed.

Just two years later, in 2012, Roth announced that he was retiring. He said at the time that he made the decision to step away from writing after rereading all his books. Roth and Bloom were companions for several years before marrying in 1990; they separated in 1995.

"I don't want to read any more of it, write any more of it, and I don't even want to talk about it anymore ..." The movie was later adapted into a feature film in 2016 directed and starring Ewan McGregor. She ultimately died five years later in a vehicle crash.
