President Trump Says North Korea Summit Still Possible

'A lot of dial tones': The inside story of how Trump's North Korea summit fell apart

"They very much want to do it, we'd like to do it", he said.

Trump also injected domestic politics into the North Korea issue Friday, accusing Democrats of not supporting the peace talks.

"We have inwardly highly appreciated President Trump for having made the bold decision, which any other USA presidents dared not, and made efforts for such a crucial event as the summit", the North Korean statement said.

"For now, we are not considering picking up the phone", the official said.

"Our commitment to doing our best for the sake of peace and stability for the world and the Korean Peninsula remains unchanged, and we are open-minded in giving time and opportunity to the USA", he said.

The tone from both sides was warmer on Friday.

"We'll see what happens".

"It looks like we are back to fire and fury as the modus operandi for the White House again after President Trump (threatened) a new 25 percent vehicle import tariff and cancelled the summit with North Korea", said Greg McKenna, chief market strategist at AxiTrader. "We'll see what happens". "Only time (and talent) will tell!"

The next day, North Korea dismantles a nuclear test site in an apparent goodwill gesture.

On Thursday, he blamed the North's "open hostility" for the cancellation of his talks with Kim Jong-un.

Trump's aides had warned that merely agreeing to the summit had provided Kim with long-sought worldwide legitimacy and, if Trump ultimately backed out, risked fostering the perception that the president was insufficiently committed to diplomatic solutions to the nuclear question.

In the city's Gwanghwamun Square Friday, a group of about 30 protesters holding the banners of South Korea's left-wing Minjung party had gathered to demonstrate against the cancellation of summit.

Trump, who considers himself a master dealmaker, has confounded aides and allies at every turn of the fateful flirtation with the North.

In his Friday statement, First Vice Foreign Minister Kim said the North Korean leader had been preparing for the summit to go ahead.

"Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of permanent peace are historic tasks that can neither be abandoned nor delayed", Yonhap quotes Moon as saying. A photo of the meeting released by the presidential office showed Moon with a deep frown.

USA regional allies Japan and South Korea, as well as North Korea's main ally, China, urged the two countries to salvage the summit on Friday.

But the statement said Trump's decision was not in line with the world's wishes and that Kim made the utmost effort to hold the summit.

"The important thing is not the meeting itself but that there are opportunities to move towards resolving the nuclear and missile issues", the chief cabinet secretary, Yoshihide Suga, told reporters.

Trump had initially sought to placate North Korea, saying he was not pursuing the "Libya model" in getting the North to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

"If the meeting takes place on June 12, we'll be ready, if it takes place on July 12, we will be ready".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told reporters Trump did not want a meeting that was "just a political stunt".

Trump, in his letter to Kim, objected specifically to a statement from a top North Korean Foreign Ministry official.

"Why does anyone believe him?"

Trump attacked House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi over her criticism of his decision to publicly brand MS-13 gang members "animals" during a White House meeting on immigration last week.

Vinograd also questioned how the Trump administration planned to engage with Pyongyang on policy if the conversation was so fixated on logistics.

Meanwhile, South Koreans said they had not been informed about the United States decision to pull, with Seoul officials having said just days earlier that there was a "99.9%" chance of the meeting going ahead as planned.

He was not informed of the decision before Mr Trump's announcement, reports said.
