Taiwan seeks 'correction' after Air Canada lists Taipei as part of China

Gap T Shirt with map of China

USA clothing retailer Gap has apologised for selling T-shirts with what it says was an "erroneous" map of China that did not include territories claimed by China, following a burst of outrage on Chinese social media. The map also appeared to leave out southern Tibet and the disputed South China Sea, the state-owned Global Times said, adding that it drew hundreds of complaints on China's Weibo microblogging platform.

Gap, in a statement posted on Weibo, China's equivalent of Twitter, admitted that a Gap brand T-shirt sold in some overseas markets "mistakenly failed to reflect the correct map of China". It also apologised for "this unintentional mistake and is now conducting internal investigations to quickly rectify this mistake".

Self-ruled Taiwan is claimed by Beijing as Chinese territory, and has become one of China's most sensitive issues and a potential military flashpoint. "We are doing internal checks to correct the mistake as soon as possible", Gap said.

In the statement sent to the Global Times, Gap said the T-shirt has been pulled off shelves in the Chinese market and destroyed.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang took note of the apology and would not say at a press briefing whether the government had complained to Gap.

Predators To Rely On Defense For Game 7 Against Jets
The Jets are 4-0 in their last 4 games playing on 2 days rest, 6-2 in their last 8 road games and 39-17 in their last 56 overall. These two teams have been involved in some of the most exciting matchups of the year, and this series has not disappointed.

I can't imagine that, as a graphic designer for U.S. clothing giant Gap, you would have ever anticipated that part of your job would require officially apologising to the nation of China thanks to an worldwide upset you caused with one of your shitty shirt designs.

In January, Chinese authorities blocked Marriott's websites and apps for nearly a week after the company listed Tibet, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as separate countries in emails and applications.

The U.S. has started pushing back against Beijing, with the White House condemning China's efforts to control how U.S. airlines refer to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as "Orwellian nonsense".

Most recently, the Chinese Civil Aviation Administration ordered a number of air carriers, including United States airlines, to identify Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as Chinese regions on their websites.
