Tesla sedan in autopilot crashes into parked police vehicle

Laguna Beach California Police Department

A Tesla Model S with its Autopilot function reportedly engaged, collided with a parked police vehicle in Laguna Beach earlier this week.

The Model S crash happened in Laguna Beach, CA on Tuesday and resulted in minor injuries to the Tesla driver.

A Tesla also rammed into a fire truck on the scene of an accident in Culver City, Calif.in January, with the driver telling authorities that the vehicle was on autopilot at the time.

"Autopilot" is the commonly-used term for Tesla's entire suite of semi-autonomous driving features, but it's not clear exactly how the vehicle was being controlled at the time of the crash.

The statement also said that Tesla "has always been clear that Autopilot doesn't make the vehicle impervious to all accidents, and before a driver can use Autopilot, they must accept a dialogue box which states that 'Autopilot is designed for use on highways that have a center divider and clear lane markings'". The officer in charge of the cruiser at the time of the crash was not inside the vehicle and thus avoided being injured.

In Greece, a Tesla Model 3 crashed after the autopilot caused the auto to suddenly veer right "without warning".

The Cavaliers turned the ball over twice out of the timeout before James got to the basket for a 12-point game with 4:41 left. Two of the three are Hall of Famers, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the top scorer in National Basketball Association history.

The driverless feature comes packaged as standard in all Tesla vehicles, which the automaker's website describes as having "the hardware needed for full self-driving capability at a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver". The driver, Walter Huang, died after being taken to the hospital.

Tesla's Autopilot feature is an advanced driver-assistant feature on the Model S and Model X that features the ability to change lanes, lane centering, adaptive cruise control, and more.

"Human error behind the wheel has been replaced with human error behind keyboard".

In April, Bloomberg reported that safety advocates were becoming increasingly sceptical of Tesla's claims that autopilot mode reduced crashes by 40 per cent, saying the company was misrepresenting National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data that itself was not fully released to the public.

The crash has similarities to other incidents, including a fatal crash in Florida where the driver's "over-reliance on vehicle automation" was determined as a probable cause.
