Trump berates DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen over border security

Kirstjen Nielsen

Fox News' White House correspondent John Roberts reported that Kelly called Nielsen after President Donald Trump "blew up" at her this week over border security.

A report from the New York Times claimed that Nielsen even wrote a letter of resignation after the outburst, but has not submitted it.

Trump has pursued his crackdown on legal and illegal immigration since becoming president, promising to strengthen the nation's borders and to build a wall along the U.S. -Mexico border.

The president's eruption was witnessed by Cabinet members plus a number of senior White House officials - including counselor Kellyanne Conway, advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, immigration adviser Stephen Miller and chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow.

She said Trump was "rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border".

In her own statement, Nielsen said she planned to "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda".

"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweeted Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton.

DHS oversees U.S. Customs and Border Protection. For several weeks, Trump had advocated for the separation policy as a method to discourage border crossings, sources said to The Times. Nielsen took the wide-reaching criticism of the administration's failures in this area personally, reportedly telling associates that if Trump was unhappy with her performance, she would leave.

While border apprehensions dipped previous year to their lowest levels ever, the numbers have been ticking up in recent months, returning to more typical historical levels. Another person said the president was primarily focused on the Homeland Security Department because he viewed Nielsen as primarily responsible for keeping unauthorized people out of the country.

"We should fold all of the TPS people that have been here for a considerable period of time and find a way for them to be on a path to citizenship", Kelly, one of President Donald Trump's top aides, said in an interview.

Trump considers Nielsen as well as different DHS officers ' are resisting directives that parents are separated from their children when people cross illegally in the united states of america, to discourage them from entering, the newspaper stated, citing the officers.

Current U.S. immigration and asylum laws allow foreign nationals passing through Mexico to arrive at the southern border and claim credible fear. He has also threatened to shut down the government by September 2018 if the Congress does not approve funding to make good on his campaign promise to build a wall on the southern US border with Mexico. The Times report claimed that she was "miserable" in her job according to a "person close to Ms. Nielsen".
