Amazon Signs With Premier League To Broadcast Pro Soccer Games

Amazon and BT have bought the two remaining packages of domestic Premier League rights, with the online giant able to stream two full rounds of top-tier games a season from 2019/20.

The US company breaks up the recent dominance of Sky and BT Sport of lucrative Premier League TV rights in a first for the online sector that is threatening to shake up the traditional sports rights market.

The Premier League comprises of 20 teams, and the package of 20 games will cover two full rounds of fixtures, thereby including all participant teams.

BT Sport has purchased the other remaining rights package.

The deal has been signed for three seasons, bringing the total number of matches to 60.

The games will only be available to their Amazon Prime UK subscribers, which is the online seller's premium service available for a fee. Sky holds the rights to broadcast 128 matches, while BT has 52.

"Undoubtedly, Amazon is pulling together a strong and growing set of live TV rights to complement its vast content relationship", he said.

In the end it wasn't Facebook or Netflix but the shopping behemoth turned tech giant, with Amazon announcing it would deliver 20 live matches plus weekly highlights from the world's most watched sports league.

Amazon just inked one of its biggest sports deals yet.

Memberships costs £79 (S$140) a year or £7.99 a month. While most large rights packages in the United States are for seven seasons or more, the Premier League offers only three-season blocks, lowering the get-in cost.

"Sky and BT are established Premier League partners and provide first-rate coverage of the competition through their live-match broadcasts and comprehensive programming", said Scudamore.

Under the new formula, the maximum a club can receive is 1.8 times the amount received by the lowest-earning club, the Premier League said in a statement.

"This new agreement will continue that trend with a subtle change that further incentivises on-pitch achievement and maintains the Premier League's position as the most equitable in Europe in terms of sharing central revenues".

The Premier League have also released details of the rights deals for the Republic of Ireland.

"With Amazon's rival, this could well be the last time that both BT and Sky own the live Premier League rights in the United Kingdom, with Richard Scudamore keen to attract more online players to the table".
