G7: Trump leaves summit prematurely for meeting with Kim Jong

The historic meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been scheduled on June 12 in Singapore as South Koreans remain cautious on recent talks of peace across their divided peninsula.

Trump departed for Singapore on Saturday after attending the G7 summit in Canada. It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before, create peace and great prosperity for his land.

Trump acknowledged uncertainty around the highly anticipated summit, saying he was bolstered by discussions in the run-up to the meeting and would not guarantee a specific outcome from the talks. "They have good emotional radars and know when we are being condescending, speaking down to them". What you want to do is start that ... but at a minimum we will at least have met each other, we will have seen each other, hopefully we will have liked each other ... In 1962, during Mr. Trump's junior year, the United States and the Soviet Union nearly went to war after the Soviet leader, Nikita S. Khrushchev, shipped missiles to Cuba to be pointed at American territory.

"I think that he's going to surprise on the upside", Trump said, adding that it "may not work out".

An article on May 29 in the Rodong Sinmun, the official party newspaper, slammed USA media reports that North Korea is seeking major "economic aid" from the United States. "It's never been done, it's never been tested", said Trump.

"That's a ideal deal for North Korea".

The president previously nicknamed Kim "Little Rocket Man," while the North Korean leader called Trump a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

"I think it would be well received and I think [Kim] would look at it very favorably. The markets are looking a lot of other things more than this", Hormats said.

Asked whether he would bring up North Korea's repressive practices and human rights abuses, Trump said "every issue" will be on the table. In a paper for the Centre for International Security and Cooperation published in 2008, Carlin wrote that U.S. officials spent thousands of hours of often fruitful negotiation with North Korea between 1993 and 2000, before the relationship again frayed.

He has not shied from using flattery either - he was the first to say Mr Trump could be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said as he prepared to leave the ongoing G7 summit in Canada early and head to Asia.

Beijing wants the summit, says Yun Sun, director of the China program at the Stimson Centre, relieved for any de-escalation in tension.

He said he is planning similar stunts for the objective of political satire in the coming days, this time in tow with Donald Trump impersonator Dennis Alan.

During a promotional event dubbed the "real" Trump-Kim summit, the men waved at shoppers as they walked through the crowded Bugis Junction mall.

Agreeing to a troop withdrawal from South Korea would be the worst possible outcome for the summit, said Christopher Hill, a former US ambassador who ran negotiations with North Korea in the George W. Bush administration.
