Justin Trudeau: We won't be pushed around by Trump

US President Donald Trump has left following his brief trip to Canada saying his relationship with the G7 countries is a 10 out of 10, and reports of rifts between the powerful countries are simply "fake news".

Trudeau said his nation is insulted that Trump unilaterally imposed stiff tariffs on Canada for "national security" reasons.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around", Trudeau continued.

But then, he used his full name. Trump has asked countries to end tariffs and trade barriers in his push for "fair and reciprocal" trade.

"They should let Russian Federation come back in, because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table", Trump said.

The US president left on Saturday for Singapore and a historic summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, claiming he had made progress convincing the other G7 leaders that trade between their countries must be better balanced or halt altogether.

Mr Trump made the comments after the communique had already been officially released in response to a press conference held by Justin Trudeau to mark the close of the summit.

Trudeau later said he reiterated to Trump that tariffs will harm industries and workers on both sides of the U.S.

But Trump's gambit, which his economic adviser Larry Kudlow told reporters amounted to a "free trade proclamation", called the other leaders' bluff - if they're so opposed to his new tariffs, he suggested, why not eliminate all tariffs?

"It allowed a dialogue, where for weeks there were uncoordinated unilateral actions and non-cooperation".

Canada and the European Union have denounced the USA tariffs as illegal and unjustified and Ottawa has proposed levies on a range of US goods next month while the European Union has pledged its own retaliatory measures.

Trump has announced tariffs of up to $150 billion on Chinese goods over US complaints of Beijing's trade practices and its alleged theft of USA technology.

"I highlighted that it was not helping in our renegotiation of NAFTA and that it would be with regret, but it would be with absolute certainty and firmness that we move forward with retaliatory measures on July 1".

In addition to the US and Canada, the group includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

But tariffs on USA imports of cars and auto parts would devastate the Canadian auto industry, which is highly integrated with the US sector.

Leaders of the G7 nations on Saturday papered over the cracks in their alliance at a summit in Canada but came away with little more than an agreement to disagree on trade, as Trump defiantly brandished his "America First" agenda. The noise of Trump's helicopter landing was so loud they had to stop talking for a while, in a scene one official compared to the opening from the US television series M.A.S.H. "To have a great military, you need a great balance sheet", he said.

"On NAFTA we either leave it the way it is as a three-some deal with Canada, the United States and Mexico and change it very substantially - we're talking about very big changes".
