Mexico Looks To Europe After Slapping Tariffs On US Pork

WATCH Opposition Leader asks Prime Minister why there’s delay in Canadian tariffs taking effect

Trump has described NAFTA as the "single worst trade deal ever approved" by the U.S., and claimed that it has led to the outsourcing of thousands of jobs from the United States to Mexico and China.

Just before he headed to the G7 summit, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a stop in the heart of Canada's aluminum country - where he repeated his pledge to try to convince Donald Trump that his heavy-handed tariff strategy is a big mistake.

Canada in particular has been outraged by Trump's tariffs, taking umbrage at the argument that they were motivated by national security concerns.

During Tyson's second-quarter earnings call May 7, CEO Thomas Hayes said the Springdale, Ark. -based meat processing giant had not seen significant tariff impact on its beef business.

"The G7 is an opportunity to meet to have frank and open discussions between countries that are longtime allies and friends", Trudeau argued.

Trump's tweet comes ahead of his arrival at the G7 Summit in Quebec on Friday, where both Trudeau and Macron are expected to push him to reconsider his imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs on his G7 partners.

Mr. Trump's top economic adviser, Larry Kudlow, told reporters on Wednesday that the USA administration won't back down on the Trump trade and tariffs dispute with US allies.

Yet another reason to slap tariffs only on imports from selected countries is to limit the pain to USA businesses and consumers that purchase those products. "Within the worldwide framework, we have to take measures and that's what Canada has done and what the European Union has also announced".

Macron has previously accused China of pursuing hegemony in Asia.

The official, speaking to reporters after Macron met Trudeau for talks in Ottawa on Wednesday, said the six non-U.S. G7 nations were united on the main topics to be discussed. "I believe in cooperation and multilateralism because I will resist hegemony with all my strength". The two leaders "agreed to continue working toward a mutually beneficial outcome" on NAFTA, Trudeau's office said.

However, he argued that other countries should be ready to have a "G6 plus one" outcome, sticking to a text that enshrines their common values, even if Trump does not sign it. We want to make sure we have alternative suppliers available when the imports from one misbehaving country suddenly get pricier.

To date, there has been no official public statement from Trudeau.

Trump also railed against French President Emmanuel Macron in a separate tweet.

"We are all engaged in conflicts in Syria, in Iraq, in the Sahel, in different places in the world".

"We're interested in defending Canadian interests - and on top of that, it turns out I'm also defending American interests, because these tariffs they're putting forward are going to hurt American workers as well", Trudeau told a news conference. According to a survey of US CEOs, many are scaling back their hiring and spending plans due to fears of a trade war. "For me it's a question of principle".

Leaders dismiss Trump's national security concerns as "ridiculous".

The Trump administration has threatened to impose sanctions against European companies that continue to do business with Tehran, an effort the U.S. has said it will resist.

The two leaders also shared a "testy" phone call in late May, where Trump wrongfully asked if Canada was responsible for burning down the White House, referencing the War of 1812.
