Palestinians Killed, 600 Injured At Gaza Border In Latest Round Of Clashes

Since late March, the Israeli forces killed at least 120 Palestinians and wounded thousands during protests calling for the Palestinian refugees' right of return and ending the Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip since Islamic Hamas movement seized control of the enclave in 2007. From there, smaller groups walked closer to the fence.

The protests at Israel's border peaked on May 15, when some 40,000 Gazans protested along the fence and violent clashes took place between troops and Palestinians.

Palestinians say the protests are a popular outpouring of rage against Israel by people demanding the right to return to homes their families fled or were driven from on Israel's founding 70 years ago.

"The use of live ammunition against journalists covering the Gaza protests shows how little regard Israel has for their safety", CPJ's Middle East and North Africa Program Coordinator Sherif Mansour said from Washington, D.C.

The IDF said protesters hurled grenades, improvised explosives and rocks at soldiers, burned tires and flew dozens of incendiary kites and balloons into Israeli territory, sparking a number of fires.

It has accused Gaza's rulers Hamas of manipulating the protests to hide the infiltration of militants planning attacks.

Israel frequently accuses Iran of fueling weeks of Gaza protests by supporting the enclave's Islamist rulers, Hamas.

It must be noted that Iran's first Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khomenei created Al-Quds Day as an annual event. Growing despair in Gaza over blockade-linked hardships, including daily power cuts and rising poverty, have driven turnout.

The protests tapered off around sunset when many demonstrators left border camps for the evening meal that breaks their fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Al-Quds day was observed throughout the country on Friday.

"Everyone told them not to do it", said a diplomat on condition of anonymity, arguing the resolution could be counterproductive if it doesn't receive at least as many votes as the one obtained in December on Jerusalem. Israel's current government has said it will not accept a partition of the city as part of a peace deal with the Palestinians.

Organisers linked Friday's protests to annual "Jerusalem Day" events in Iran, which like Gaza's dominant Hamas Islamists preaches Israel's destruction and was incensed by the US recognition in December of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

The eastern sector houses major shrines revered by Muslims, Christians and Jews. The compound sits on the ruins of biblical temples and is revered by Jews as the holiest site of their religion.

Palestinians were not happy that the match would have been held in Jerusalem and Rajoub wrote to Claudio Tapia, the head of the Argentine FA, last week accusing Israel of using the match as a "political tool".
