Pre-cut melon likely cause of Salmonella outbreak — CDC

An outbreak of salmonella in IL and four other Midwestern states was likely caused by pre-cut melon, federal health officials said Friday.

So far, the CDC said, 31 of 60 victims have been hospitalized, though none have died. The recalled products were delivered to stores in those states, as well as Georgia, Kentucky and North Carolina.

Caito Foods has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation. Caito Foods recalled fresh-cut watermelons, honeydews, melons, cantaloupes and fresh-cut fruit medleys on Friday. They were sold in clear plastic containers at stores including Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods.

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is warning everyone about a Salmonella outbreak here in the state.

If you bought pre-cut melon at a Walmart in Missouri, throw it away. Now. If you have eaten a contaminated pre-cut melon and experience diarrhea, fever and cramps go see a doctor immediately. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is working to identify the source of Salmonella and anticipated more recalled to be issued as more information becomes available.

Other symptoms can be much worse for young children and people over 65, however, and the CDC estimates about 450 people die of salmonella each year. It does not apply to whole melons. In rare cases, an infection can lead to death unless a patient receives prompt treatment with antibiotics.

Additionally, the agency said MI consumers who bought pre-cut melon at a Kroger store should also throw out the product.
