President Trump Says Summit With North Korea is Back On - Katie Pavlich

Vladimir Putin

"But it'll get done at some point".

Trump said he'd told North Korea's leaders to "take your time" with the peace process.

Kim has rejected previous United States calls for North Korea's unilateral nuclear disarmament and argued instead for a "phased" approach to denuclearisation of the entire Korean peninsula.

"It went very well", President Trump told reporters on the White House lawn. He also expressed Moscow's support for an agreement Kim reached with Moon at a summit last month that focused on measures to ease hostilities and increase exchanges between the two Koreas.

As NPR's Lucian Kim reports from Moscow, Lavrov passed on "warmest regards" from Putin as he invited Kim to visit Russian Federation.

But he has had two summit meetings in recent weeks with South Korea and made two visits to China as part of a campaign of diplomatic outreach aimed at easing Pyongyang's isolation and USA -led global sanctions.

Lavrov's visit to Kim comes as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is meeting with a senior North Korean official in NY, where they tried to work through recent problems to get the USA and North Korea back on track for a June 12 summit between President Trump and Kim in Singapore. But since then, planning discussions have resumed, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's high-level meetings this week in NY with the North Korean official.

"We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12". The days since have seen a flurry of diplomatic efforts to get the summit back on track.

He also urged the state to hold off on relinquishing their nuclear weapons until tangible action had been taken to lift the economic stranglehold.

Roseanne Barr claims she was ‘Ambien tweeting’
After co-stars Sara Gilbert and Michael Fishman tweeted their own condemnation of the tweets, Roseanne fired back. In another tweet: "As I called my manager to quit working on Roseanne , I was told it was cancelled ".

"I don't even want to use the term "maximum pressure" anymore", Trump added, referencing his preferred term for the punishing USA economic sanctions against North Korea.

The letter from Kim Jong Un had to first be inspected by United States officials before it was delivered to the president, a White House official confirmed.

Trump also discussed the letter he wrote to Kim last month.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency chief who has traveled to North Korea and met with Kim Jong Un twice in the past two months, said he believed the country's leaders are "contemplating a path forward where they can make a strategic shift, one that their country has not been prepared to make before".

Mr Pompeo told a press conference that he was confident talks with North Korean officials were moving in the right direction towards a historic summit between the two countries.

Since that short-lived crisis, diplomats from both countries have conducted an intense flurry of talks, culminating this week when Pompeo sat down in NY with Kim's envoy. And if the U.S. grants this wish without getting a good deal in return, it could send both parties back to the brink of nuclear war.

In Pyongyang, Kim said his will to see denuclearisation on the peninsula remained "unchanged, consistent and fixed" and hoped improved North Korea-US relations would be solved on a "stage-by-stage" basis.

The letter: The Wall Street Journal, quoting a foreign government official, said the letter from Kim Jong Un was "fairly basic".

North Korea's nuclear weapons programme has made significant advances in recent years and poses a threat to the United States. He was granted special permission to travel outside the NY area in order to meet with the president.
