Attorney: Ex-FBI lawyer Page won't show for House interview

Report: 2 House Committees Will Interview Lisa Page This Week

Lisa Page - whose affair with Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Peter Strzok has led Trump to dub the pair the "FBI lovers" - was threatened with contempt of Congress charges after she failed to honor a subpoena to appear before the House Judiciary and Oversight Committees Wednesday over her role in politically sensitive probes of Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton.

While the report didn't connect Page's and Strzok's biases with specific actions in the Clinton probe, the IG is still working on a separate report regarding the Russian Federation investigation.

Jeffress said that the House intelligence and oversight committees only issued the subpoena on July 7, giving Page less than a week to familiarize herself with documents that the Federal Bureau of Investigation gave Congress related to the testimony. Page had already left the Mueller team. Trump tweeted. "Together with her lover, FBI Agent Peter Strzok, she worked on the Rigged Witch Hunt, perhaps the most tainted and corrupt case EVER!"

"Through her actions and words, Lisa has made it abundantly clear that she will cooperate with this investigation", Jeffress said. He will return to Capitol Hill for the hearing on Thursday, the first time he will speak publicly about the messages.

Page's attorney, Amy Jeffress, said in a statement that her client didn't have enough time to prepare for her interview. "As a result, Lisa is not going to appear for an interview at this time".

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) was displeased by the letter from Page's lawyer.

Page was schedule to testify before Congress Wednesday.

A report by the Justice Department's internal watchdog released last month detailed the texts between the two, including an exchange in which Strzok said, "we'll stop it", in reference to a potential Trump election win.

"She's known for about seven months", said Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia. Democrats have strongly objected to the GOP-led investigation, saying it is an attempt to undermine Mueller's probe and sway public opinion against investigators.

The top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (N.Y.), suggested Wednesday that "the real reason" Republicans were weighing contempt measures against Page was to "set up a dramatic thing" before Strzok's public interview Thursday.

"Americans across the country are alarmed at the bias exhibited by top officials at the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation, and it is imperative Congress conduct vigorous oversight to ensure that never happens again". "Right?!" Page wrote to Strzok.

The Judiciary Committee also held a contentious hearing June 28 with FBI Director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. The pair exchanged texts sharply critical of Donald Trump when he was running for president in 2016.

He testified behind closed doors last month, and his attorney has also clashed with Republicans on the two committees, accusing them of mischaracterizing Strzok's testimony and then refusing to release the transcript of his interview. Following that report and the firing of Comey by Trump, the Department of Justice Inspector General launched an investigation.
