Cop under investigation after ignoring woman's pleas for help from drunk man

WATCH: Man Attacks Woman for Puerto Rico Flag Shirt [FULL VIDEO]

Mia Irizarry complained that a man at Caldwell Woods was questioning her citizenship and telling her she shouldn't be wearing the shirt, although Puerto Rico is a us commonwealth. The man repeatedly told the woman "You should not be wearing that in the United States of America" and questioned her USA citizenship.

In a statement posted to Twitter, the Forest Preserves of Cook County said, "We are aware of the the June 14 incident and video".

You're "not going to change us", the harasser told the woman - though it wasn't clear exactly whom he meant by "us".

Irizarry asks Officer Connor to help, saying "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing".

Irizarry, who was renting out the area for her birthday, flagged down a park police officer and asked for help.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", he said. "Then you should not be wearing that", he says in the video. As she asks him to get out of her personal space, he continues to berate her.

A police officer who did not intervene during the incident resigned Wednesday following criticism for not helping the woman.

Irizzary then tries to plead with policeman again, saying: 'Officer, I paid for a permit for this area, I do not feel comfortable here, is there anything you can do?' She said the group politely complied but her Puerto Rico shirt appeared to act as a trigger to the man.

Reports identify the man as Timothy Trybus, 62, and 10 minutes into the video, more police officers arrive.

Puerto Rico's governor, Ricardo Rosselló, posted a string of tweets Monday night calling the video "an undignified event in which a Puerto Rican woman was brutally harassed by a bigot while an officer did not interfere".

The most disconcerting part of the video is that while Mia fears for her safety, a police officer stands in the background.

During Tuesday's news conference, police officials clarified that the other police officers arrived after Connor called on his radio for assistance. "Can you please grab him?" to which he turns his head and walks in the opposite direction.

The investigators are expected to interview the officer this week about the incident, adding that the investigation would wrap up soon. "People have just as much right to be here as you do, and when you're drunk you don't belong here". I am appalled, shocked & disturbed by the officer's behavior.

The officer appears to finally engage and Irizarry can be heard saying, "OK, well how come you're saying something when [my brother's] going up, but when he was coming up to me, you didn't do anything?"

"I am very sorry for the experience the young woman had to (endure) and I'm further troubled by the lack of response and action by the initial officer on the scene".

Luis Arroyo, Jr., a Cook County Board Commissioner said he felt the officer "did not do his duty".

'That officer did absolutely nothing he did absolutely zero, ' she says in the clip. "This is not the America we all believe in".
