Man charged with hate crime over Puerto Rican shirt incident

Officer Who Didn’t Step In When Woman In Puerto Rico Shirt Was Harassed Resigns

Trybus had also already been charged with misdemeanor assault and disorderly conduct.

Cook County Forest Preserve officials said Thursday they had planned to interview the officer involved in a now-viral Puerto Rico t-shirt video - but that he resigned before they could do so.

The Facebook Live video, filmed by Mia Irizarry, shows her being continually abused by a man later identified as 62-year-old Timothy G. Trybus at a picnic area in Cook County, Illinois.

In the video, Trybus could be seen telling the woman that she should not be wearing the T-shirt in the United States, despite her attempting to explain that Puerto Rico is a US territory.

"You're not American, if you were American you wouldn't wear that".

Mia Irizarry posted a Facebook video of the alleged incident, appearing to show a man, later identified by the department as Timothy Tybus, approaching her and criticizing her T-shirt, which is designed with the Puerto Rican flag.

Irizarry asks a park police officer to help, saying "I am renting this area and he's harassing me about the shirt that I'm wearing". He was supposed to face a disciplinary hearing Thursday. "You know that right?" Despite Connor's resignation, forest preserve officials say their work is just beginning. "You should be wearing United States of America flag", he said.

He added that the park staff had apologised directly to Ms Irizarry and refunded the money she paid for her permit.

He tells us stories from his playing days and they inspire us. "I try to create gaps for my teammates, " Giroud said. Each semifinal features a team that has won the World Cup as well as a team seeking its first trophy.

The officer was put on desk duty while officials investigated the incident, but he resigned this week. As Trybus continues to harass her other officers arrived and a female police officer finally steps in on behalf of Irizarry.

On Twitter, he said: "We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background. Our officers made the arrest today and we will continue to support the prosecution of this matter".

"Officer, officer? I feel highly uncomfortable".

A female officer asks to see his ID and can be heard telling him that he's intoxicated, to which he replies, "Well that's your judgment".

‏"After the incident, we immediately launched an investigation pursuant to our personnel policies into the response of our officer", it said, in a series of posts on Twitter. She explains Irizarry has a permit, and she warns him he could be arrested "for not being compliant". "I really do believe there are people who say to themselves, 'If Trump can do it, I can do it".

But it's critical for us to also agree that words and thoughts being expressed by people in America right now, people with voices that reach millions, can contribute to such despicable actions.

The incident was condemned by Puerto Rico Governor Ricardo Rossello, who said he was "appalled, shocked and disturbed" by the officer's behavior. Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917 and have the right to vote in United States presidential primaries but not in presidential elections.
